The Role – Business Director, Partnerships and Content (12m maternity cover)
As Business Director you will work as a senior member of the Play activation team, overseeing the Havas Media Network business, with a key focus on Havas Media. Forming part of the Senior Leadership Team, a BD helps to build, maintain, inspire and nurture the strongest team of integrated thinkers and brilliant do-ers, and proactively leads areas that contribute to the ongoing vision and growth of the agency overall.
You will oversee the output from the Account Directors and Account Managers, ensuring first-class planning and delivery, and ensuring strong commerciality across every project. You will be continuously identifying revenue growth opportunities across all clients (example clients: EDF, Matalan, JDE, BBC plus many more).
The role will require a great deal of collaboration both internally; with Client Partners, strategists & creatives and externally; building strong relationships with media partners at the most senior level so that Play become their partner of choice. You will build excellent relationships with your clients and act as a trusted advisor to them and their other agencies to maximise their partnership, influencer, and content opportunities.
As a senior support to your team you will be responsible for ensuring strong client relationships across all clients. You will have a focus on forecasting and growing revenue, leading on revenue forecasting and resource planning for Havas Media clients. By taking a senior role in the team you are responsible for first-class creative planning and delivery, will be required to work on a number of new business pitches and will lead on learning and development for more junior team members.
You will have excellent knowledge of a range of partnership and content disciplines spanning AV, digital, social, experiential/live, influencer/talent & production and have a passion to continuously learn and apply new creative thinking to client solutions across all Play capabilities. You will have your finger on the pulse of new opportunities in market and drive innovation through the work you deliver for clients. You have planning and/or strategy experience to ensure ideas are delivered with rigour and strong narrative. Identifying opportunities for cross-selling will be a key part of your role, and this will require a good understanding of the wider suite of Play products and services.

Key Responsibilities:
A Connector:
- Being able to quickly build strong, effective relationships and a close rapport with clients at the most senior level engendering a relationship of trusted advisor – supporting planning and strategy teams, devising more creative solutions to solve their individual business challenges.
- Doing the same with media partners at the most senior level ensuring that they come to you with new to market opportunities and all relevant proactive opportunities for key clients.
- Developing new content solutions for clients both in response to briefs and proactively through the support of more junior members of the team.
- Champion strategies and ideas that are remarkable and inspirational for our clients.
- Working with the Account Directors and more junior members of the team identifying any award-winning campaigns ensuring all relevant entries are submitted at an exceptionally high quality and on time.
- Working closely with trading team leads at Havas to ensure Play are working in line with trading and commercial deals as well as barter requirements.
Ideation & Planning:
- As a Business Director, you will be responsible for taking proactive opportunities out to Havas Media clients to grow revenue beyond forecasted targets. You will need to track and manage opportunities across all Havas Media clients, working closely with client team leads including Client Partners and Strategy leads within Havas Media.
- You will be the owner of key client briefs, working with the management team to create the right team to respond to each brief whilst being responsible for the output.
- You will ensure all teams develop proposals that deliver against our core proposition – connecting brands to consumers through meaningful connections in culture.
- You will support the team in ensuring all proposals are strategically sound and delivered with strong narrative demonstrating our full 360 offering.
- You will have a detailed understanding of Play’s suite of products and services, and will work closely with the strategy and activation leads within Play to identify and secure new opportunities.
- You will be capable of inspiring confidence in the right solution for our clients – and able to pitch these solutions in formal and informal environments
Commercials:
- Responsible for accurate revenue tracking and resource planning for the team
- Accurate and timely reporting of hours on timesheets to ensure profitability and avoid over-servicing.
- An excellent understanding of the Play commercial model
- In liaison with the management, operational, and commercial teams, building scopes for all activity driving commercial benefit and up selling whenever viable
- Excellent in deal negotiation securing the best outcome for both the client and Play
- Ensuring all draft contracts are a good representation of the agreed deal with full KPI’s built in and the correct contract process is followed
- Ensuring hours being worked on projects to not exceed the agreed scope and where they do, flag this early for client discussion by the appropriate member of the team
- Accurate forecasting on client income in liaison with the management team, ensuring any changes and amends are flagged
- Responsibility for delivering forecasts agreed with the management team
- Management of client budgets ensuring all resource is sold in and charged for. Isolating any opportunity to carry costs within Play rather than outsourcing to deliver incremental revenue Management of budgets to include both first-party resource and third-party costs, where relevant.
Team Management:
- Line management of a number of the team, prioritising their workload and allocating resource effectively
- Pastoral management of a number of the team, setting their objectives, facilitating their development, identifying opportunities for them to upskill across Play’s wider services. Sharing feedback in a regularly and timely manner
- Prioritising the happiness, motivation, and retention of the team
- Identifying and implementing ways to support the team across process and ways of working (templates, commercials, operations)
- Developing effective relationships with senior internal colleagues to ensure solutions are used effectively within the overarching client plans
Collaboration and Innovation:
- Positive contribution to the development of a creative and innovative culture within Play
- Lead by example as a senior member of the activation team, encouraging collaboration within the rest of the team, adopting new ways of working, and supporting internal initiatives.
- Keep a finger on the pulse of innovation and creativity in the industry, identifying opportunities and partners that can help deliver innovative, award-winning work for clients and secure incremental revenue
- Building excellent relationships with media partners at a senior level, establishing Play as a great agency to work with in terms of quality of briefs, ways of working, and opportunities to collaborate on award-winning work
