Celebrating Black History Month With Don Amaechi

Black History Month • By Don Amaechi, Sales Director Europe at NielsenIQ •

What does Black History Month mean to you personally?

For me, Black History Month isn't just about looking back at history. It's also about acknowledging the impact that Black people continue to have across business, culture, sport, science, politics, and everyday life. It provides an opportunity to learn about stories that may not always be given the spotlight they deserve and to share them with others.

The UK is a true melting pot of cultures, backgrounds, and experiences, many of which are Black. One of the things I value most about Black History Month is that it gives us the opportunity to highlight some of these diverse communities and celebrate the richness they bring to British society. Whether it's recognising the influence of Caribbean culture, the achievements of African communities, or the contributions of Black Britons across generations, the month helps showcase the breadth of experiences that make up modern Britain.

Being from both Nigerian (Igbo) and Caribbean heritage, I feel fortunate to draw from two rich cultures with strong traditions, resilience, and a deep sense of community. Black History Month gives me a moment to honour both sides of my family history while celebrating the diversity that exists within the wider Black community itself.

How did you get into the industry, and what has your career journey looked like so far?

I've worked in the media, marketing, and data industry for over 20 years now... which does occasionally make me feel old! But the reality is that it's been an exciting journey through an industry that has constantly evolved and reinvented itself.

My career has spanned a variety of roles across media owners, digital audio, and data-driven marketing businesses. I've been fortunate to experience the industry from several different perspectives, which has given me a broad understanding of how audiences consume media and how brands can connect with them more effectively.

Over the years, I've seen first-hand the transformation from traditional media planning to today's highly sophisticated, data-led marketing ecosystem. I've worked through major shifts in technology, consumer behaviour, and measurement, helping clients navigate an increasingly complex landscape.

More recently, my focus has been on the intersection of data, audience insights, and marketing effectiveness, first with Nielsen Marketing Cloud and now with NIQ.

One of the things I enjoy most about this industry is that you're always learning. No matter how long you've been in the business, there's always a new technology, platform, or consumer trend emerging. That constant evolution is what has kept me engaged for more than two decades.

Looking back, I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunities I've had across different parts of the media and marketing ecosystem. While the channels and technologies have changed dramatically over the years, my curiosity about audiences and my passion for data remain as strong as ever. That's what continues to drive me today.

Who have been the people, mentors or role models who have influenced you most, and why?

The people who have influenced me most are my parents. They instilled strong values in me from an early age, teaching me the importance of hard work, respect for others, and staying true to who I am. Those foundations have shaped both my personal life and my career.

Professionally, one of the biggest influences on me in recent years has been Maureen Stapleton. She is the kind of leader who brings out the very best in people. What I admire most is her ability to create an environment where everyone feels encouraged to contribute, express themselves, and be authentic. She challenges us to think bigger, supports our growth, and empowers us to achieve more than we often believe we can ourselves.

What moment in your career are you most proud of, and why does it stand out to you?

I’ve been fortunate to have a number of career highlights over the years, but if I had to choose one, it would be winning the Silver Award for Diversity at Nielsen. It stands out because it wasn’t just recognition for business performance, it was recognition for helping to create a more inclusive and diverse workplace.

As a Black man, diversity and inclusion are topics that are personally important to me. Receiving that award was a proud moment because it reflected something I genuinely care about and believe makes both organizations and individuals stronger. It was rewarding to know that my efforts had made a positive impact, and it reinforced my belief in the importance of creating environments where everyone feels valued, represented, and able to succeed.

What experiences have shaped the kind of leader or professional you are today?

I think some of the experiences that have shaped me most, both as a leader and as a person, have come from witnessing and experiencing racism at different points in my life, both personally and professionally.

Those experiences taught me the importance of resilience, empathy, and authenticity. They gave me a deeper understanding of how powerful it is when people feel included, valued, and heard, regardless of their background. As a result, I've always tried to be the kind of leader and colleague who creates space for different perspectives and helps others feel comfortable being themselves.

What do you hope the next generation of Black talent coming into advertising and adtech will experience?

My hope for the next generation of Black talent coming into advertising and adtech is that they enter an industry where they feel they truly belong from day one. I want them to be judged on their ability, ambition, and potential, not to feel that they have to work harder than others simply to be seen or heard.

I'd love to see more Black professionals represented at every level of our industry, especially in leadership positions. Representation matters because it helps people see what's possible and gives them role models they can relate to.

I also hope they experience workplaces where diversity, equity, and inclusion are more than just initiatives or conversations. They should be embedded in company culture, creating environments where people can bring their whole selves to work and where different perspectives are genuinely valued.

Most importantly, I hope they feel empowered to be authentic. Some of the challenges I've experienced throughout my career have taught me how important it is to have leaders, mentors, and allies who support you and encourage you to succeed.

What would you like your own impact or legacy within the industry to be?

In a world increasingly shaped by AI and technology, I’d like my impact and legacy to be defined by the people I’ve worked with rather than the products or platforms I’ve helped sell.

Technology will continue to evolve, but what truly endures is how we invest in and support one another. I hope to be remembered as someone who helped people grow in their careers, opened doors for others, championed diversity and inclusion, and created opportunities where they might not otherwise have existed.

Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to work with leaders and mentors who believed in me, encouraged me to be myself, and helped me reach my potential. If I can have that same impact on others, whether through mentoring, coaching, or simply helping someone gain the confidence to take the next step in their career, that would be the legacy I’m most proud of.

Ultimately, long after the technology has changed, I hope people remember how I made them feel: valued, supported, empowered, and able to succeed as their authentic selves.

If people reading this interview took away just one message from you this Black History Month, what would you want it to be?

My message is simple: be curious about different experiences, be open to different perspectives, and never underestimate the positive impact you can have by supporting and uplifting others. When people feel they belong, everyone benefits.
