How to tell your Career story when you’re interviewing, or moving roles
“Your story is what you have, what you will always have. It is something to own.”
- Michelle Obama
If you've read my previous blogs, you'll know that career moves are personal journeys. In my first blog of the series, we explored the times when you might be at a crossroads, and in the second, we debunked the myth that a perfect CV is the key to career moves. Now, let's use the art of storytelling to craft and share your unique career narrative! We’ve all been there: even if it’s creating a client deck or presentation at work. Storytelling on powerpoint! Ugh! But how can you apply that method to your career story? What would it look like if you could only use photos, and I only gave you 1 slide to tell it?!
Why your story matters
When moving jobs or careers, it's about weaving a narrative that connects your experiences, values, and aspirations. Your story is a powerful tool. You can
- Highlight transferable skills: Show how your past experiences equip you for new challenges.
- Demonstrate growth: Reflect on how you've evolved and what you've learned.
- Express passion: Convey your enthusiasm for the new path you're pursuing.

Crafting your own Career story
Here are some steps to help you articulate your career narrative:
- Connect the dots: Find common themes or skills that link your past roles to your next job.
- Highlight motivations: Explain why you're making the move and what drives you (try it out on a friend or family member - saying it out loud will actually help you to gain clarity!)
- Tailor your message: Adjust your story for different audiences. Is it HR, a Business leader or the hiring manager that you’re going to meet? Emphasise aspects that align with the audience’s interests or needs (pick out aspects from the job descriptions and company culture on the website. Some company’s even put ‘interview tips’ on their website, so follow those!).
Embrace all your experience, twists and turns, and use them to enrich your story. As you prepare to share your narrative, always be authentic, know your goals, and own your story.
