Tell us your career path before you were in TA
Before TA, I worked as a Media Planner at Initiative, one of IPG Mediabrands' communication agencies. I started my career as a Media Apprentice at 18 years old, and progressed into a permanent role upon completion. After three years, I realised the part of the role I enjoyed the most was supporting new starters and sharing my journey as an apprentice with people in the business and externally. Therefore, in 2018, I made the decision to move from the media side of the business into TA, specifically Early Careers. Over the last 7 years, I've been able to draw upon my own experience and knowledge of the business to help craft and streamline the work we're doing in the Early Careers space.
From your personal experience what's the best thing about being in talent acquisition?
Supporting the next generation with their job search. It's becoming increasingly difficult for young people to secure their first role. Whether it's supporting with CV writing, interview preparation, or guiding someone through a recruitment process, it's nice to know you're making a positive difference. I also really enjoy working with charities, schools, colleges and universities to share knowledge and raise awareness of opportunities within the media industry.
Since you've been in TA, how have you seen it change?
There's been a shift in priorities amongst entry-level candidates. Factors such as office culture, development and work-perks used to be high on the agenda, whereas now candidates are more conscious about salary and a hybrid set up.
How do you see AI impacting the future of talent acquisition?
AI is now woven into the recruitment process for candidates. 59% of students and recent graduates, and 58% of professionals have already or plan to use AI in the next 12 months to boost their chances of landing the perfect role*. Candidates are not only using it for CVs, they're using it to prepare for interviews, automate applications and tackle psychometric assessments. It's levelling the playing field for those struggling to break through. As AI grows, employers will need to adapt and address how AI is potentially being used in their recruitment process.

What advice would you give to job seekers today?
Network, upskill and be proactive. Networking is great way to meet contacts and get your foot in the door. Upskilling yourself by enrolling onto courses or certificates will strengthen your CV and demonstrate commitment to the industry/role you are trying to pursue. Be proactive where you can. Email the recruiter, ask for updates, meet for coffees, etc.
